I think attitude palys a big part. If you have the attitude that you may be pushing someone (selling) then you probably aren't helping them. You will be creating your own obsticles and not uncovering true obsticles the student has. As far as the future, i think there is a new phenomenon (maybe not new) but recently developing. I have found a lot of students who haven't been responding to phone calls or emails are now more into texting. I feel very comfortable writting an email, but a text is new to me because so much is shortened and differnt acronyms. It just seems, especially the younger crowd, they prefer to communicate by text message.
