Coping Strategies

To cope with stressors, sharing information and discussing with trusted friends and family members will actually help. When I am stressed, especially, after a week’s hard work, I create a me-time and try to go movie, visit friends or visit a favorite place of interest in order to unwind. This strategy has helped tremendously. Another helpful strategy is to listen to good music and inspirational speeches. Austin

Common Stressors

Stressors are really detrimental to sustained productivity. Some of the common factors that stress out faculty may include too much standards, that is, too many policies, changing policies, unrealistic deadlines, lack of freehand, excessive scrutiny, biased assessment and inability to appreciate faculty contribution. Other stressors may include students not showing up for discussion and expecting to make maximum points for concepts they do not fully understand.

Putting a fresh face on an old course

While I did find Module 1 interesting I do everything that it discussed. What I'm looking for are new ways to do old things. Sometimes I teach the same courses, 2, 3, or 4 terms in a row and while it may be new to the students it is old to me. Are there any suggestions as to how to make that first day more interesting when using the same materials over and over again? What I'm looking for is a way to take what I have (which from my instructor surveys is awesome) and make it awesome to me again.

"Alternative Students"

Does anyone have any suggestions for a late assignment policy when it comes to adult learners? I teach for an institution that consists primarily of non-traditional learners and find that the challenges they face are not the same as traditional students. This can include anything from sick children to homelessness. I don't want to discourage them as they are already at risk for dropping out.

Students who just want to rebel

Just wanted to get your thoughts on students who just want to constantly push things. I had a student who everyday wore sunglasses in class (which is against our dresscode), I asked him to remove them as well as other faculty/staff making this request. He would, but then he would later put them back on. I felt like I was giving him the attention he wanted by continually asking him to remove them, but at the same time didn't like how he was challenging my authority. Any suggestions on how to handle something like this? Andrea

Paper highlights and APA format

Using grading rubric is an excellent way of making consistent and faster grading of student papers. However, the highlighting or underlining of salient points may even make it easier. The problem with this approach is that it may be inconsistent with APA formatting for schools that require adherence to APA writing
