walter, Oh, I hope other instructors follow your example. This is the foundation for any ELL instructor teaching in a multi-cultural classroom. Sharing customs is a foundation to understanding and learning. I compliment your efforts and praise your commitment. Arlene Muller

Shelly, What an excellent idea! Your wisdom in removing the fear with just a simple  word change.  Here is another idea that might compliment your teaching technique.  Ask your students to read the chapter before your lecture.  Just read, do not study  or underline, just read.  Tell them your lecture will point out the important parts of the chapter.  This technique motivates them to read and attend the lecture.

Joe, I absolutely agree that relevance is key.   The key is called employment, which is the reason the student invested in his/her future.   I also feel that the institutions need to present the "key of employment" starting at the 2nd month in their program with Career Services.   The student needs to stay focused each day and every month on their new career. Each day the lesson plan needs to show  how relevant the material is to the student's new career.

Yes, I agree lesson plans are the best tool for the instructor, as well as, for the student.  It teaches the student responsibility, time management and accountability.  The student will be able to transfer these qualities to his/her new career position.

Raghda, I love your cultural exercise that states,"I also compare and contrast different languages to the English in order to show them examples from their languages and English." This is a visual concept along with your auditory presentation will really help your students learn their new language. Arlene Muller

Patricia, I agree with you.  The staff and faculty need to make a connection with the students and they must be aware of the challenges students face while attending school.  Balancing school, work and family will offer many challenges for our students.  I always feel the link is integrity.  Our word of integrity to assist students to reach graduation and even hold their career position beyond three months.  The students need to know we will not give up on them and that we will do as much as possible to help the student with coping skills to balance school, work… >>>

Ronald, Wow, I love your thinking and I agree. Vocabulary alone does not equate learning of theory and application. It sounds like your patience in the classroom is a Hallmark feature. It is amazing how much students can learn from each other. Arlene Muller

Laura, I have often presented faculty training and tell them that YOUR ATTITUDE is the ATTITUDE in the Classroom. I like your attitude! Arlene Muller

Laura, Outstanding Laura, Yes, I agree students are more afraid of making a mistake than learning. I love your statement, I teach hands on procedures and I always try to help students and remind them that is not about the mistake is what you do after a mistake. It is similar to we all fall down it is getting up that is important. I think you have the right attitude! Arlene Muller
