David, Competency 5 has within it the requirement for a business plan, but the plan itself can be an excellent way to assess all the other elements of the competency. And you are right, this can be done at a higher critical thinking level than a written quiz because students must APPLY the knowledge. The other obvious benefit is that it helps to prepare students for a successful practice upon graduation...if done correctly. It is less effective if the business plan is done too early in the program and/or it's not designed to be realistic enough, so students are just… >>>

David, Thank you for this post. I can imagine that this close networking has also helped your placement rates as students are making connections prior to graduation. Best, Angie Myer
Ronda, Thank you for sharing your techniques. Has the college received a fair amount of responses to the emails, social networking, phone calls, and surveys? Any "magic tips" on how to increase the response rate you can share? Thank you, Angie Myer

Dear Paul, Welcome to the forum and thank you for your post. Many have mentioned the obvious financial challenges of creating affordable programs for today's student while maintaining financial solvency of the institution. I appreciate how you have also included the additional realities of the non-traditional student. These challenges appear to be more far-reaching and would possibly require a paradigm shift within the institution to accommodate (as opposed to saying "work it out on your own"). Since you are sensitive to this, I am curious to know if your institution has developed any strategies to help non-traditional students with any… >>>

Ronda, Thank you for your perceptive post. When working in adult education, the line between "friend" and "teacher" is indeed important. Relating it to the boundaries one must establish with clients is often helpful. It is important for instructors to stay clear of these dual relationships in order to best serve their students. Often this comes with experience, but if there is an experienced instructor on staff such as yourself, this wisdom can ben shared in trainings to comply with this standard. That is exactly why the Commission has chosen to emphasize instructional skills in addition to technical skill development.… >>>

Dear David, Welcome to the forum and thank you for your post. Your advice is important, especially the "FOLLOW UP". Gathering placement data is an ongoing challenge, and most difficult if done in a vacuum. Your institution is fortunate to staff placement services and tracking. We are encouraging more of our schools to invest in this area in any they can. I encourage you to read some of the other posts (calls for help) and respond with advice from your experience in this realm. Thank you, Angie Myer

Lea, Thank you for the detailed reflection of your challenges. I like reading the process you are going through with your mission statement. There is a reason that many books and training courses have been written to help organizations develop their missions. It should indeed be a "complicated" and in-depth process involving as many stakeholders as possible because it is the foundation of all decisions made afterward. (Be sure to keep documentation of this thorough review for your SSR.) Your concerns on how to generate reliable placement data returns is an ongoing one with no easy answers. I encourage you… >>>

Lea, This sounds like a very comprehensive assessment. I am looking forward to seeing it. Thank you for sharing your process. Best, Angie Myer
Teri, Very important observations, and the reason that many distance learning courses need MORE interaction than is typical in face-to-face. Without the physical presence, both students and instructors need to know that the other one is "there." Thank you, Angie Myer

Teri, This is a great way to APPLY the business competencies. Just be sure that these skills are part of the learning objectives and evaluation criteria. Best, Angie Myer
