Nikkole, A break in the routine with a different individual who brings a diiferent spin or perspective can be very inspirational. Barry Westling
Jodi, Students do like recognition for their good work. I try to build in ways (other than extra credit) to reward and recognize effort, participation, and understanding. Barry Westling
Jodi, Good ideas. When students are interested, they'll pay attention. Barry Westling
Jodi, I believe lessons that provide opportunity for practicing critical thinking and application to their career area does the most to get them ready for their work setting. Barry Westling
Deborah, Students need order and structure to reinforce that their instructor is in control and is ready each class session. Providing the best learning environment does much to get and keep students engaged, participating, and stay interested in class. Barry Westling
Jodi, I encourage prospective students to do a job shadow to make sure they've made a good decision. Once in school, students are often quite motivated by what they see, envisioning themselves in the work setting. Barry Westling
Brian, My take on EC is less generous (not better, just different). I want to teach the best I can and work hard to get my students to learn and understand. Grades are a reflection of the degree to which a student has measured up to the requisite learning. If I want to fairly and accurately measure learning, EC can represent only a very small fraction, because to me, it's not about points and grades, but rather the learning and degree of understanding the student has demonstrated. Barry Westling
Brian, I tell new teachers to always keep in mind that they are in charge, it's their classroom, and class expectations are aligned with what the instructor thinks is best. Of course, student's challenge this all the time, but my point is even with challenges, we set the standards that students have to obey. How we go about reinforcing that can occur different ways, but there needs to be a plumb line for the instructor to reference things against. Barry Westling
Jan, Sometimes I share with students we have no real time mangement, only self management, and it's what we do with that time that matters. Certainly, preparation for our instructional role is needed if we want good student outcomes. Barry Westling
Christopher, Feedback is communication, and good communication dispels misinformation. Barry Westling
