Activity

Paul, I drop the lowest quiz score, and will give an additional essay question on a test. In both these examples, the student is demonstrating their knowledge, and the final grade (although adjusted slightly) is final -- no further adjustments. Barry Westling
Ramondo, Good. This is a good way to assist planning for where more (or less) emphasis aye needed on certain topics. Barry Westling
Paul, Sure, in fact I try to avoid the use and label "test" whenever possible. Adjectives such as evaluation, assessment, checkpoint, checkup, checking for understanding, and similar terms seem to take away some the potential angst some students feel when they hear "test". Barry Westling
Ramondo, Students are very tuned in to the mood, attitude and presence the instructor brings into the classroom. Consistency is important too. Students like order and routines, and our upbeat persona can be a great way to create a positive learning environment. Barry Westling
Ramondo, Very true. Students sometimes will have vague or unclear ideas about what work setting entails. So well planned field trips or informed workers can add an element of reality and a degree of motivation too. Barry Westling
Wenda, A break in the routine is one thing. What it is substituted for it is another. Good field trips should create a vision of opportunity and hope, along with realistic plans to become the best (or better) students and graduates. Barry Westling
Wenda, Lack of preparation can potentially, destroy a reputation, instructor credibility, enthusiasm and interest by students, and an overall demoralizing haze over the class. Yecch, who'd want all that? Barry Westling
Wenda, Right! We always have to consider our audience, their preparation and prior knowledge, abilities, and interests. Resources are only helpful if they contribute to improved learning. Barry Westling
Terrell, Animated instructors usually create the sense of motion, action, and flow. We want student engagement, and even subtle things like circulating about the room can be a positive force towards creating an active, lively atmosphere for learning. Barry Westling
Wenda, It's really simple -- the more senses used increases information retention, recall, and application. Barry Westling
