About me

Activity

Kayla, As a practice, I assume that students need (and want) direction. In my syllabus I spell out specifically when and what is required, due dates, format, parameters, grading method, etc. I try to leave nothing to wonder about. In your situation, it may be helpful to state not only when an assignment is due but also how soon it can be submitted. Barry Westling
Kathy, Critical thinking does make for better employees. Of course, skills, knowledge, and the ability to interact in a professional manner are assumed outcomes for students as well. Barry Westling
Kayla, Good instructors often "consider their audience" when planning course material, among other considerations. Understanding our role and personality as it relates to assuring students are given all the opportunities to learn will provide a good foundation for planning classes. Barry Westling
Kathy, Competent, quality instruction plainly takes time and effort to plan for, and we are not serving our students (or employers) if responsible planning for every class does not occur. Barry Westling
VALERIE, I think the ability to ask questions about specific aspects of the career setting of individuals other than their instructor benefits students, validates information the instructor may have shared, and can be a motivational boost. Barry Westling
michael, Of course, I don't grade pretests, and I find that when students know they won't be graded, that removes a lot of the anxiety a student may experience. Also, how the rationale for the activity is presented can contribute to better student acceptance. Barry Westling
michael, Open book search is a variation of the pretest, but can certainly prepare students for what's coming up in class. Barry Westling
Frederick, Terrific. It does take commitment, time and effort to be ready and organized. But as educators we have to be accountable and responsible to help our students in the best way we can. Not being prepared is a no-win situation. Barry Westling
Randolph, Yes, without current feedback, a student may have less information about their status, and also less time to make needed corrections. Barry Westling
michael, These senses in particular are powerful. We've probably all experienced an odor or fragrance that immediately broght a memory, perhaps even many years past. Using senses in the classroom can contribute long lasting memory and recall of pertinent course information. Barry Westling
