Donald, I agree, and students usually appreciate the addition of something a bit different from just lecture and discussion. Also, I try to plan a change-up about every 20 minutes, just to help keep attention, focus, and interesting. Barry Westling
David, Right, being approachable is essential for students to feel comfortable asking questions and seeking assistance. Sincerity, patience, and having a good sense of humor can positively contribute to good connections with students. Barry Westling
Dyana, Readiness for the work setting is a hoped for goal. And I think that also includes soft skills such as good writing and communication, professionalism, dress and grooming, and a positive attitude. These attributes are not always included in the curriculum but still are needed for success in the workplace. Barry Westling
Dyana, Right. Students will often emulate the (positive) traits they see their instructor demonstrating. This is also true for undesirable traits (language, promptness, dress and grooming), for example. Barry Westling
David, It's true, linkining with another instructor or class when it is known that an interesting or informative speaker may be visiting is a terrific method to share resources. Also, asking past graduates to be guest speakers can be a an abundant resource. Barry Westling
Diane, There's nothing like the feeling that the instructor understands a students difficulty and is willing to offer advice and assistance that shows they care. This also builds trust and respect. Barry Westling
Diane, I have also given the same pretest at the end of a course to demonstrate just how far students have come. They usually can't believe how much progress has occurred. Barry Westling
Diane, Right. Learning can come all types of resources, even the students themselves. And after all, it's the learning that's most important, eh? Barry Westling
Ali, Even a little constructive feedback can create multiples in terms of understanding, and perhaps mastery of the subject matter. Keep-Stop-Start is a great place to narrow down to where student achievement can be optimalized. Barry Westling
Diane, Feedback is so important, as it helps provide direction, or bring students closer to our goals for them. Kind words of support along with suggestions for improvement can produce inhanced performance, and perhaps increased levels of respect and trust. Barry Westling
