Tracey, Yes, without the needed preparation, satisfactory student outcomes re not likely to be very successful. Solid prepartion sources that at lest there is a plan in place for student learning. And with good planning, students are more likely to do their part by being engaged, participating, and involved in their learning. Barry Westling
Randall, Your example very nicely demonstrates one method of creating a student centered learning environment. What I particularly like is that your class begins with establishing the format that will carried throughout the course. By setting that layout the students see from the beginning what to expect, and every day the method is reinforced. Thinking takes practice, and daily repetition is a great way to provide an opportunity, without fear of being wrong or penalized for trying. Barry Westling
Michael, Right. As students progress in time, they need to know their progress made, advice for improvements, and Kudo's for a job well done. I believe the sooner this done, the better response and outcomes can be expected. Barry Westling
Michael, That sounds awesome. Knowledge of prior learning can be invaluable in the planning process. Barry Westling
Michael, Yes, and if students can get on the same page as their instructor, the transfer of that essential knowledge is much more of a realistic goal. Barry Westling
Michael, Hopefully respect will occur as the result of preparation, but even if that doesn't happen, I feel we have a duty to our students to be as ready as we can, regardless. Respect and credibilty are surely likely to follow, anyway. Barry Westling
Todd, Right. They want and need guidance and direction. Sooner than later is an appreciated gesture by most students, even if the information is less than wonderful. Barry Westling
Mindy, There is merit in building a students confidence. Not sure if extra credit is the best way to instill that. Whatever works, is fair, and available for all. Barry Westling
Todd, Prior knowledge about a class's past learning is a valuable bit of information, in the sense of planning for adjustments in the daily lesson and delivery strategies. Barry Westling
Mindy, Good spin about needed and just need to review. A perfect role for pretesting. Barry Westling
