Kelvin, I think the thing guest speakers provide is reinforcement and validation of what their instructor has provided, at least that's a possibility. The field trip provides the visual that can potentially amp students who have otherwise only vague ideas about what some segments of their profession offers. Barry Westling
Gordon, Right, and often there can be transformation of focus, where some students suddenly become inspired to do better based in part by what they saw. Al;so the break in routine can be healthy and contribute to renewed focus in class. Barry Westling
Robert, I find that opportunities for field trips exist, although the element of liability has diminished access in areas that once were available for tours. Students enjoy these treks, and it helps shape their thinking about aspects of the workforce not usually available to the classroom and/or lab setting. Barry Westling
Christopher, Sure, if an instructor appears interesting, approachable and patient, students will naturally be more inclined to pay attention, remain engaged longer, and be more apt to retain important course information. Each instructor will have their own version of some of these traits. Students will appreciate the accomodating learning environment the instructor creates. Barry Westling
Terry, Yes, and most of the time, when an instructor takes time to personally discuss the student's status, that creates a better working relationship, and suggests that the instructor cares about the students success. Kind words, spoken with sincerity always go a long way towards healthy and positive student perceptions of credibility. Barry Westling
Kit, I tend to agree, as if the information is needed for success in the program and work setting, it should required material, not optional, at the discretion of the student. Barry Westling
Daniel, Great. I maintain that knowledge without an application serves only to entertain. Therefore, getting students educated to the level where they can perform independently and solve problems in the workplace is among our highest expectations for our students. Barry Westling
Lilia, Yes, and I really believe students can excel when they feel empowered and confident. Reaching that level doesn't happen without assistance from the instructor. And sharing grade information is a wonderful way to encourage, support, and give creative advice that reassures students they possess the wherewithal to be successful. Barry Westling
Lilia, Yes, and tucked into that definition of "knowledge", should include critical thinking skills, communication (written and verbal), and professionalism. These traits are needed for long term successfulness in the work setting. Barry Westling
Lilia, Yes. I believe whenever we can involve students in the instructional process, it's a more enjoyable experience, students are more engaged, and they tend to retain more of the information as a result. This is also a great example of a simple back up plan that can be implemented as needed on a relatively short notice. Barry Westling
