Tracy, Students appreciate when their instructor is ready for class. They want (and deserve) to have direction provided along with a competent instructor committed to their education. I think students become more compliant and the environment for learning is improved when the instructor organizes materials and instruction according to a plan, and then exercises it with confidence. Barry Westling
Tracy, Sometimes students will become attracted to some part of the profession almost by accident when they hear something they didn't know they learned through the guest speaker or field trip experience. When I see motivation like that, it's really inspiring to me, and I know students feel like they received a value added training activity. Barry Westling

Katelyn, One creative way to address students with "test anxiety" is to ask them to verbally answer questions (along the lines of a special accomodation). Also I dont't use the word test or quiz; I've substituted "assessment", "performance check", or "check-up". It's surprising that by not using the word test or quiz, students feel less anxious about demonstrating their knowledge. Non-graded pre-testing is another way to practice assessment without consequences in order to reduce anxiety. Personally I shy away from EC. I feel if material is important then it should be included and required by all -- just my opinion.… >>>

Katelyn, Great! I'll have students come up to the white board to make responses to the PPT slide being projected too (same technique was used for years using the overhead projector). Involving the students is prefered to me doing all the work. Sometimes students will complain about "the glare" from the slides on the whiteboard (which is a legitimate problem, especially for those sitting near the center of the class). Barry Westling
Katelyn, You make a good point. I agree that many students may have only a vague idea about the scope and specific tasks involved in a given profession. Job shadowing may help provide a limited view and I think the success of the shadowing experience is dependent a lot on the person conducting the tour. In class, periodic field trips can provide something not available in routine class or lab, and become a motivating activity that excites and inspires students. Barry Westling
Adam, Each instructor has to decide what works best for them. Barry Westling
Adam, Right on! I think think that connection is soooo important...it can make the difference between an honest openess by students toiwards their instructor or a automated turnoff as soon as they enter the classroom. Barry Westling
Adam, I agree, and also believe students can be so inspired by some things they might see during a field trip they might even begin to take their studies more seriously. Barry Westling
Cassandra, Yep, and students are perceptive to whether their instructor is prepared (even if they are not); you're right, it sends the wrong message. We want our students to have trust and respect in their instructor's competence and credibility. Good preparation is the key to that. Barry Westling
Patricia, These are great activities. As I've mentioned in this forum, any course work that is done by students beyond what is required is always welcomed. This enhances learning and understanding, and is consistent with our role as instructors. Extra points given for incomplete, missing, or failed course work misses the point, in my opinion, and may raise poor grades but has little to do with learning. Barry Westling
