About me

Activity

Algevis, Yes, knowing where one stands is the first step in making an improvement. I like to be close and personalize my discussions with students. I feel this helps me build trust and respect. Barry Westling
Algevis, That sounds goo. For me, standing next to a student while I lecture can keep a distracted student on track. Also, asking a question of a specific student is usually helpful as well. I try (as often as possible) to never have my back to the students. Barry Westling
Angela, This sounds great. I think students respond better to instructors when their name (first or last) is used, it's just more personal. I feel I'm shy, but also an experienced educator and subject expert in my profession. When I'm wearing that hat I can be very dynamic. Inter-personally, I'd prefer to just go shut my door and work in my office. Barry Westling
Wilmanie, Sounds good. Students want and desire to know their progress, and usually are appreciative of ideas, suggestions and supportive encouragement. This also helps build trust and respect between instructor and students. Barry Westling
James, I try to use the course objective and daily lesson goals and determine what is most important - that is, what I want (and insist) my students must walk away from my class with. Then I use the routine (tests, quizzes, homework) and other activities (discussion, projects, written assignments, worksheets, class participation) and try to find the appropriate weighted amount each type of assessment is worth. You're right, it's not an easy chore. Barry Westling
James, I think better instructors are always trying to find ways to break information down into digestible bits and in a way that the majority of students understand. I've heard too many times that students feel "that instructor knows the material, they just are not able to teach it to us". It really takes effort to achieve what we want for our students. Barry Westling
James, Sometimes trying something new is a little uncomfortable at first. But if its worthwhile, our diligence to work at it will make us stronger overall. Barry Westling
James, Right. We are always interested in our effectiveness as instructors. Personalizing is one very effective way to capture attention and make course work meaningful. Barry Westling
Donna, Many instructors and institutions actually have written policy fobidding the giving of extra credit (to improve a grade). I support student who want to do something more to learn, but I'm with you, I am unwilling to give credit for it. Barry Westling
Donna, Great use of assessing prior knowledge. I'm sure your students benefit from this activity. Barry Westling
