Lillian, Reflection on how a class went, particular needs, improvements, things like this can be easily jotted down and reviewed later (as our tends to fade over time). Barry Westling
Lillian, Yes, I believe students want and need direction and instructions about what is expected of them. When we are prepared, time to plan how best to conduct class will always result in better outcomes. Barry Westling
Larry, I think students should know what to expect from day one of the course via discussion and as described in their syllabus. Status information should be information that helps students determine how close (or distant) they are from achieving the level of performance they desire, along with the instructors opportunity to provide feedback, constructive advice, support, and suggestions for getting to the students destination. Barry Westling
Larry, Right, as we become more knowledgeable about prior learning, we are better able to prepare our lessons for our students specific needs. Barry Westling
Clarence, It's true, skills are usually kinesthetic tasks, whereas knowledge can be learned, expanded, and is creative. Interesting quote from A. Einstein: "Imagination is more important than knowledge because imagination has no limits". Barry Westling

Patti, I have found in these situations (of clinical competency with pas/fail) that there is a lot of individual variances that can be observed and tolerated. Some actions may not be exactly as desired but assessing the basic question of whether the student is performing safely, achieving all the essential proficiencies, and has performed to a level that is at least satisfactory is what needs to be measured. Although my college uses a letter grade system for cliniucal, I prefer the pass/fail, as I do no want to pass along a student performing with a C- avearage to patients. Barry… >>>

Tom, Of course not everyone will have a sense of accomplishment (those that may be doing poorly), but that doesn't mean we can't offer support and caring words of encouragement. Our advide and suggestions to pull up a grade can demonstrate that the instructor has interest in the student's success. And that can be a motivating experience. Barry Westling
Tom, Great! Practical situations such as you describe help students become critical thinkers, and that is so helpful both as workers and in the students personal liives. Barry Westling
Tom, That's it. Work ready with the tools to do it well. Barry Westling
Tom, True, and when the instructor has taken time and planned the day, students will appreciate that effort with perhaps better learning and certainly more confidence in their instructor. Barry Westling
