Manuel, Students appreciate a "ready to go" practice by their instructor, even if they never say so. Barry Westling
Andrea, Yes, and imparting the attributes of good work ethic will assist the graduate in their career for many years ahead. Barry Westling
Thomas, Right! We want to be effective role models for the real world of work, and whether anything is ever said or not, student will notice the well organized, prepared instructor. Barry Westling
Andrea, Yes, and without adequate preparation, it is very unlikely that our students will receive what they need, and perhaps barriers may exist. Barry Westling
Karyn, Cool! I am always pleased when an educator-participant finds useful tools from this module to make their instructional duties more efficient, interesting, or meaningful. Good luck. Barry Westling
Karyn, Great sentiment and perspective. Students don't always comment about well organized instructors, but I can tell you they certainly appreciate the preparation and care that goes into each lesson. Barry Westling
Jennifer, Yeah, good point. There's a lot of media that may be related, or interesting, but missing key information. Of course, using just a partial segment from a longer piece can add to the variety of the lesson delivery. Barry Westling
Kenneth, Small percentages seem okay, but I prefer to emphasize the merits of extra credit assignment, and diminish the emphasis on points. If points are needed to raise a grade, that usually suggests there are gaps in understanding that points alone are not going to correct. Barry Westling
Kenneth, These are good, time-tested methods. Asking specific students questions usually gets the attention or conveys the message to remain focused. Whenever I have to stop and ask questions to reengage, I also have the specific students stay after for a chat about my expectations and their desires for learning the material. For me, it's important to try to be assertive without being punitive. Barry Westling
Kenneth, It's good to be sensitive to the needs of the class. Of course, student learning outcomes is our primary goal, and while students may prefer one medium over others that would provide a better learning experience, instructors can be tuned in to that balance of good media choices, and the best media choices.
