About me

Activity

Brian, Absolutely, in fact effective discussions are one of the primary activities that practicing student centered instructor benefits. Barry Westling
Bonnie, Even when a class is energetic and interesting, students enjoy hearing a different voice and alternative perspectives. Seeing reality vs photos, video's, or textbook material can add a dimension of greater enthusiasm, and many times a new level of motivation too. Barry Westling
Donna, Very true. We'd like our students to be responsible (and accountable), but many times they are not. Sharing grade information also provides a way to offer our advice, encouragement, and instill hope for successful completion. Barry Westling
Donna, Using what you find works is good for your flow, as you're more comfortable. I think we always need to ask, "what's best for the student?". Perhaps a short video (YouTube), use of a flip chart, coloring books with colored pencils -- some not so high tech but add variety, help keep interest, and make memorable through engagement and multiple senses. Barry Westling
Donna, Terrific. This is a great example of using technology to enhance and engage students. And this particular activity will probably endure as a lifelong memory due to the remarkable access and stunning visual learning it provides. Barry Westling
Avis, I think in most trades, we are looking to measure proficiency and competency, and there are dozens of ways to set these up. Barry Westling
Avis, Pretesting can be a great tool if the instructor wants to take a bit of extra time to learn what prior learning current students possess. Barry Westling
Avis, I like to word assessment rather than testing. Assessment implies a measure against some standard, where test implies more rigid guidelines. Perhaps semanatics, but students will respond more favorably when I say assessment than when I say test. Barry Westling
Avis, Yes, and through thorough preparation, the ability to modify, change emphasis, or provide more (or less) content will be more easily facilitated by the prepared instructor. Barry Westling
Christopher, I think it's a good thing when a guest speaker validates material their instructor has previously covered. I liken it to one of the latent benefits this unique learning experience provides. Therefore, in the sense that a guest speaker or off campus visit is a resource, I'll always appreciate whatever resource makes a motivational connection with students, regardless of the source.
