Robert, Good. If we know the eventual outcome we're seeking, knowledge about where the students prior knowledge can benefit the instructor by tweaking the curriculum in an effort to bring the class together to a common level, and then expanding the instructional process from that point. Barry Westling
Cindy, Great. Most trades and professions are constantly evolving, some even being reinvented over many years. Current material and information has to be introduced to stay informed with the evolutionary process. I think professional journals, and profession-specific websites provide a great resource for keeping up with times. Good guest speakers, and interesting field trips can also assist with embracing changes in the state if the art. Barry Westling
Rick, Great. Understanding basic traits about oneself is essential for self improvement, progress and instructional effectiveness, and improved student outcomes. Barry Westling
Cindy, Yes, as in many professions, the tasks that are taught are based on the principles to improve something (or prevent something). Getting students to be thinkers and problem solvers brings a higher functioning individual to the employer. Barry Westling
Robert, I like to meet in person because I can convey my sincere desire for their success through support, encouragement, advice, suggestions, and praise. Barry Westling
Eric, Each class is different and usually requires some adjustment to their individual cohort needs, and pretesting is one way of discerning what those unique needs might be. Barry Westling
Eric, I think there are levels. At a minimum, the knowledge and skills must be provided. Next, soft skills such as attendance, punctuality, and professionalism will be helpful. A higher goal would be to impart critical thinking, problem solving, and the pursuit of life-long learning. Barry Westling
Eric, Students need and expect their instructors to be effective facilitators of their training and education. That cannot happen without regular preparation and effort in readiness for class. Barry Westling
Rochelle, There are really so many excellent web-based resources available, the challenge is to very selective as to what will provide the best use of the instructor and students time. Barry Westling
Cindy, Feedback is very important, and in my opinion, should be prioritized in all ways possible. We can encourage, support, praise, advise, suggest, and measure progress through sharing grade information. We can also get a sense about our effectiveness as instructors too. Barry Westling
