About me

Activity

Erin, Review and repetition can be good, especially for recall information. I think students practicing critical thinking and problem solving creates better opportunities for learning. Barry Westling
Daniel, What's been working well for me is a modified version of "the flipped classroom". Students are expected to read text assignments, view PPT's -- essentially all I would normally lecture about. In class, more time is spent on written exercises, case scenarios, and problem solving. I feel this is where I can provide the most help to the students, where my time and their time is used most effectively. Barry Westling
Daniel, Students can be forgiving if most times there is good planning, organization, and preparation. It comes down to whether or not students feel they are getting their money's worth. Barry Westling
Carrette, Yes, good organization will help provide order in the classroom. Students seem to always want to push the envelope as to classroom and instructor expectations. Without a written plan along with a discussion, great difficulty can result. The personal discussion reinforces "these are MY rules", so students will be dealing directly with their instructor, and therefore more likely to comply. Barry Westling
Roberto, If we want to measure learning, evaluation and assessment are key to that mission. Of course, there are dozens of ways to assess, and I believe more creative methods does more to accurately assess our students performance. Barry Westling
James, Higher grades are a good thing, but if we want grades to reflect learning that's occurred, extra credit ought to to play little to no role. Extra assignments are great, but those should be above and beyond the required work -- and there are other ways than "points" to recognize students for special class assignments. Barry Westling
James, Right! Transfer of applicable knowledge along with critical thinking and problem solving gives students a good start as they begin their career. Barry Westling
James, Yes, we have a responsibility to our students, to give the most of our experience, knowledge, training, and education. Barry Westling
Willie, Without a sense of progress made or missing assignments, it'd be difficult to successfully make any needed changes. I believe the more frequent this information is shared, the better Barry Westling
Cassandra, On a more philosophical note, successful career program completion can provide, safety, security, and hope for a better future. But the knowledge, skills and behaviors are part of the key that unlocks these traits. Barry Westling
