Activity

John, In one way, sufficient means all that is needed to meet course objectives. As you say, there are dozens of methods and resources to attain the best delivery of needed material. Barry Westling
Frank, I adopted "friendly, without being friends" a long time ago. I think being approachable and patient creates a welcoming manner to make a connection with my students. Barry Westling
John, Retention is good. Application is also a needed outcome, and the ability to solve problems and think critically would be higher level outcomes. Barry Westling
Frank, Yep! As in most work settings, the employer expects readiness by their employees. Same situation for our classes. Barry Westling
Frank, When I'm teaching, added stress is not something I need. Smooth classes are a product of good preparation. Barry Westling
John, Right, and any time we can get students inspired is a GOOD thing! Barry Westling
Andrea, Used appropriately, extra credit in small increments can help with morale and grades. This is an area of grading that has to be addressed by the individual instructor and institution. Barry Westling
Andrea, Too often it is assumed that students have the requisite skills and knowledge to begin their studies in a class. Whether they do, or should is one question, but the practical point is understanding where students actually are with their incoming knowledge. Of course, the pretest is one terrific method to get a handle on the overall level of the group. And as you point out, too much time may transpire before "weaker" areas are identified, and unnecessary backtracking may be required. Barry Westling
Andrea, Immediate activity is a great way to reinforce learning. Modeling practices your instructors did is great too, because those ways had meaning for you and therefore, when you put your spin on some activity, it will come across with a similar, creative feel. Certainly, your students will have memorable thoughts about participation in your classes. Barry Westling
Kenisha, Right! And at the minimum, we need to display confidence to the students that we have the competence (education, experience, training, and background) to effectively conduct the facilitation of class material. Barry Westling
