John, Our preference should dictate the order of delivery, rather than the content; you are correct - here, our preference has no rightful place. Barry Westling
Valerie, All these actions are effective methods. Student engagement is nearly always a constant challenge, even for day classes. Keeping the student needs in mind can only be a beneficial approach. Barry Westling
John, Being approachable lets students know they can come to you. Coupled with patience, courteousness and willingness to assist each and every student will contribute to achieving student respect, high morale, and credibility. Barry Westling
MacDameon, Yes. And of course, for many students, that's just the beginning, with the hope that our student/graduates will continue to learn, grow, and excel in their profession. Barry Westling
John, Great attitude and principle to live by. Barry Westling
Ajay, Yeah, one very important piece is to intervene early and often. The least desirable outcome is to arrive at the end of the course and find there is not enough time to correct study habits, and too few points to compile a satisfactory grade. Barry Westling
Tracy, This is true in many cases, but not all. I help students with their textbooks by guiding them how best to use the text, where to find what is most important, what help adjunct resources compliment the text, and when possible, try to guide what is "need to know" vs. "nice to know". However, I never what to limit students in their quest for learning. Barry Westling
Ajay, I think enthusiasm, passion and patience can be conveyed by nearly every instructor, but perhaps in their own way. In any case, students are just more likely to engage when they feel there is a positive atmosphere for learning. Barry Westling
Darlene, Sometimes we need to have a good Plan-B. But we won't know that unless we take time to plan, organize and gather resources to ready it all for the class. Barry Westling
Louise, In some courses this approach is probably very effective. Barry Westling
