Seth, I put my daily plan of events up on the white board, along with what specific textbooks and related resources the student will need that day. If they come to class and see they are missing a needed resource, the white board information reduces the degree of unpreparedness. Barry Westling
Irum, Motivation, morale, and inspired vision of a better job (and life) are often received as an outcome of both the guest speaker and field trip experience. Barry Westling
Richard, I agree asking questions of real work setting workers is extremely valuable. I've found students seem to be very bold asking questions and the speakers are usually very candid in answering questions. This of course contributes to a better learning experience, and serves as an extremely motivating activity. Barry Westling
Richard, You make a good point. I think students regardless of age come in all varieties, where younger students may act maturely and be accountability, and older seasoned workers may be the biggest whiners or marginal in their seriously. To me, student centered instruction implies one needs to relate to each student "where they are", and deal with their uniquenesses. Barry Westling
Ed, Dropping the lowest quiz score, or adding an optional essay type question on an exam are good ways to give a bit of a boost. These methods don't just give points away, are based on actual and pertinent student demonstration of knowledge, and usually reflect a very small percentage of the overall grade.of the grade. Ed, My basic premise is two fold. One is to get a sense of prior learning, and the other is to tweak my instructional plan to more closely match what students will need to successfully complete the class. I begin with course objectives and try to identify what level of mastery a student would need to begin advancing their knowledge. Most course objectives inherently include multiple sub categories of topics, and I'll select (or create) questions from these topics to sample their level of performance. In general if 50% of the class fails to correctly answer a question, I use… >>>

Darrell, This sounds great! The ability to quantify prior learning as you describe takes pretesting up a notch in effectiveness and utilization by you and or your instructional team. Barry Westling
Ed, Role playing is a great example of the natural use of senses in learning. Senses are called into action without the specific awareness that different senses are being used. But in the end, the learning experience is enhanced. Pretty much, I think just about any hands on application just naturally requires more sensory involvement, as opposed to more static, passive instruction, such as sitting and listening to a lecture. Martin, Yes, approachability and sincerity are so important in the establment of trust, respect, and credibility. Wise instructors learn that students are individuals, with a variety of personality and academic dynamics that could potentially interfere with the instructional process. Therefore, doing all we can to create an "environment of access" makes for better student/instructor relationships. Barry Westling
Acie, It's true, some students freeze up when they hear the word "test". Barry Westling
