James, Appreciate your ideas and insights. I think you ate right that treating students with respect and in a professional manner helps model and instill these behaviors in them. Proprietary higher eduation leaders are weeding through the significant change in the regulatory environment, with many ambiguities and unanswered questions remaining.  However, it is clear that there will likely be significant changes in how our schools operate.

Identifying and leading these areas of change while  maintaining daily operations, responsibilities, and performance  can be challenging.  A few thoughts that may be helpful during these trying times include; staying true to institutional mission and core values is important during times of change as it provide staibility and sound reminder to everyone in the organization what is most important (The North Star).  Also… >>>

Theodora, Very good insight. Abraham Lincoln, who had a few tough situations to deal with was quoted as saying that most decisions he had to make we're wholly good or wholly bad. His job was to find the best decision possible. This takes courage and the further one rises in leadership roles the consequences of these decisions are greater. Do you have any examples of courageous decisions you have had to make recently or have seen others make? Dr. Blake Faulkner

Nathan, I think confidence and trusting your intuition are traits that strategic thinkers typically possess. I also agree with you that really understanding the business you are in and taking time to continually learn more about the internal and external environment are essential to effective strategic thinking. However, I have seen many highly committed young leaders that have become very effective strategic thinkers because they committed themselves to doing these little things continually that provided the foundation for their strategic thinking. So although I agree experience helps broaden and deepen our strategic thinking, I think some develop this capacity quicker… >>>

Cynthia, Nicely done. Involving people involved operationally in executing upon a decision is a good practice where it is possible. Not only do they have better buy-in but also likely will provide insights that well help make a more informed decision. Do you have an example of a decision you have made recently where you included these elements in the decision making process?
