I find that by using the Formative Evaluation Process it helps to let the student know where they are and need to be in order to be successful in my class. When all is said and done there are no surprises.

Involve your students in teaching

I had a group of Master Instructors visit my class. They had some input that was effective. They suggested that you should try to lead a student toward the answer of a question, rather than just answering it. By asking the student a question you can draw them toward the initial questions answer. This tends to promote thought. Students will join in the discussion.

Hands-On seems to work best

I find that when I read my student surveys, most of the feed back states the demonstration portion of the class, followed by student production is most popular. I understand the importance of lecturing, but a majority of the time in my class is set aside for the student to do-it-to-know-it.

Praise in Public

I was told by someone I admired, that you should always praise in public and punish in private. That stuck with me and I practice this in class.

Although it is tempting at times to come up with an answer when you are unsure of something. I find the best answer is "I am not sure. I would like to get back to you on that". But, be sure and follow through.

Role Model

I find that students look up to us as instructors. They may not aspire to be an instructor, but they appreciate our knowledge and experience. It is important for us to always keep this in mind as we try to deal with our daily challenges. We need to leave it behind us and put on our game faces when entering our classes.

Learning disabilities

One of the biggest problems that I have encountered as a teacher is identifying students learning disabilities when they are unwilling to be forthcoming about them. It is important to show empathy from the get go when addressing this topic. The student needs to feel comfortable sharing this information with you. You must instill trust.

Leading by example

I always try to lead by example. Meaning, I am always professional, curtious hard working. This sets the tone for students to follow.
