I have found a few ideas that, if added to our current orientation, will enhance the experience for incoming students. I like the idea of inviting current students to "circulate" in the meeting room before the actual orientation starts. I also agree with the concept of having fun and engaging activities but not making them too corny. Maybe a Jeopardy type game with fun facts about the school...
I was introduced to a few ideas in this unit that I found to be interesting and "workable" in enhancing our existing retention program. I would love to implement a "lunch and learn" series where issues like stress management, financial management, parenting skills and health topics can be addressed in an informal setting. It would also be nice to have guest speakers at these events that highlight various professions. I think students would appreciate this time to come together, if only for a short time once a month.
Mentoring and social integration begins at Orientation. Our student government members assist with welcoming new students and are introduced during the orientation program. They also plan and implement various events that engage students in fun activities or offer opportunities to purchase "hot lunch". They are also involved at graduation where they assist in wherever needed.

You might have better luck looking at the pathos learning website. Happy hunting!

I have found that a positive influence is something that others take note of. They think it's odd that an individual never speaks negatively and in fact, finds something positive in every situation. I often tell my students to operate on the "Thumper" rule. Thumper's mother (the bunny in the movie Bambi) always says, "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all!" She was very wise!

I love the ideas that were presented where you are free to think outside the box. I appreciate music and have used it in the classroom to calm students down before taking an exam. I also love telling good stories with a purpose. It's a great way to get students to remember important concepts. I think these things make a teacher "real" to students and hopefully they will feel comfortable approaching the instructor with issues that may come up. These things are a great way to "connect" with students.

My office is a safe place for students who are discouraged, frustrated or upset to come for a "time out". They know it's a place where they will not be judged and where they can vent their frustrations and/or fears. They will find a listening ear and suggestions/advice upon request. It's also a place to share good news and happy times! The most important thing is that whatever discussion takes place will be kept in confidence and will not be "spread" around. Honestly, some colleagues find it beneficial and use my safe place as well!

As a part of my new job as retention coordinator, it's my privilege to teach the introductory Career Development class. In this class we discuss various topics that may be life changing for students who haven't been exposed to topics like study habits, using technology, dealing with stress, time management, careers, diversity and relationships, positive self talk and affirmations. This allows me to connect with each new student (I plan to become involved to some degree in the sections that I'm not teaching)and share vital information for personal and professional success in addition to developing a relationship with each one.… >>>

I have taken the opportunity to become a stress managment facilitator. As such, you would think it's easy to manage your own stress, but that is not always the case. It's much easier to tell others what to do and/or how to do it as opposed to putting it into practice yourself.

It is true that stress, over time, can affect your health and your relationships. It's not worth losing these things that are ultimately important over continual stress from a job. Life's too short!
