Rocio, You are so on target with your ideas, and the fact that your involving your school's communication department is just great. I have no doubt that your students are reaping the rewards of your focus and innovation. Elizabeth Kemler
Rocio, You are so right about this-communication skills are consistently said by employers, to be the most important thing they look for in the hiring process. Having a professional demeanor is certainly critical as well. What kinds of things do you do with your students to help them develop this? Elizabeth Kemler
Rocio, This is so true! That initial excitement can wear down pretty quickly with rejections. I always recommend sending out weekly inspirational emails to students to keep them motivated and hopeful-including success stories of people who succeeded after a great deal of struggle. Elizabeth Kemler
Rocio, I think your plan of action sounds right on target, especially the idea of analyzing the why and how response to any rejections. Elizabeth Kemler
Amanda, What a fantastic idea-I love that you're focusing on harnessing the incredible power of the web to create a professional presence. This also allows them to incorporate some creativity and fun-which helps of course with motivation. Elizabeth Kemler

Felicia, I'm so sorry to hear that! I would definitely recommend talking to the employer about their employee's behavior (no specific names but the general idea). Most employers would not be happy to know that their employees are behaving in this way. I understand how hard your position is..on one hand you want your students to get a job but on the other hand you don't want to convince them to go into a potentially hostile work environment. Perhaps the employer/supervisor would be able to give you a better sense of whether or not that is typical of the culture/enviornment… >>>

Veronica, This is great advice! I always think its a good idea to give the students practice handling difficult situations--you can do this through role plays in the class. Elizabeth Kemler
Veronica, Do you have any ways of keeping them motivated during the job search process? Sending inspiring emails, talking to people working in the field already-perhaps graduates? Elizabeth Kemler
Veronica, I like the idea of applying what the student has already learned; also, to suggest that even though they may not have worked yet in their chosen field, they bring all the learning and experience from their lives-which is usually more than they realize! Elizabeth Kemler
Felicia, You seem to have a really good handle on how to prepare students for interviews; I love that you have them do a number of mock interviews and dress for success which I always recommend. Elizabeth Kemler
