Sharon, Great stories--I've heard some equally unbelievable ones! You have lots of great ideas here..I'm curious about what you suggest to the students to help them relax as that is certainly the very hardest thing to do before an interview. Elizabeth Kemler
Arturo, I agree with you absolutely; employees consistently say that communication skills are even more important than technical skills which can usually be learned. Elizabeth Kemler
Arturo, I've found that it helps to show students examples of poorly done resumes as well and dissect them so they can see exactly what doesn't work. Elizabeth Kemler
Arturo, Do you offer your students support in maintaining a positive attitude and staying motivated? Elizabeth Kemler
Arturo, This is sound advice to be sure. Elizabeth Kemler
Maria Rosario, What a fantastic opportunity; I can't think of a better way for students to get real-world experience while making critical connections. Elizabeth Kemler
Sharon, I really like your approach; the research is invaluable as it shows that the student is interested not just in any job, but a job with this particular company. I am also a big fan of thank you letters; even if the student doesn't land the job at that time, it leaves a good impression which could be helpful if they ever choose to reapply. Elizabeth Kemler
Maria Rosario, I like your advice to hold to the high standards; my concern would be reporting the lack of high standards to a supervisor because it could potentially create a hostile work environment for the new employee. What do you think? Elizabeth Kemler
Tequilla, I can imagine how difficult it is to transition from the school kitchen to the workplace-especially given how fast paced restaurant work is. I think you are right on target with your focus on teamwork and the importance of taking responsibility for mistakes. Elizabeth Kemler
Yolanda, It sounds like you have a good understanding of your students' challenges and how to offer the needed support. Elizabeth Kemler
