About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Michael, I think it is important to reflect back on your own learning experiences just as you have done in order to establish how you are going to approach your students and share your expectations. It is a fact it is easier to get to a successful conclusion when you know what the goals are and how to achieve those goals. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Henry, Good walk through step by step in terms of your expectations and the pay off that will come if they will invest the time and effort needed to be successful. This sets the stage for a successful course and enhanced learning. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Michael, This is a great way to start a new class. Thank you for sharing your ice breaker with us. It is a fun one that requires the students to think a little bit as well. I know this activity generates a lot of laughs as well as discussion. It will be of help to other instructors looking for ways to start their classes. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Michael, Good strategy to follow in terms of seeing the learning environment through the eyes of your students. This way you can create a setting that is supportive and engaging for to and for them. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Henry, This is a very good point. You cannot fake it or the students will eat you alive or if not they will just turn you off. Also, your suggestion of having a variety of options in terms of activities is a must because you never know how the course will unfold. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
BRENDA, This is such important part of their career development. You are right about customer relations being lost today. If your students learn how to treat patients has individuals and in a professional way it won't be long before they set themselves apart once they are out in the workplace. You are doing a great service to them by having this emphasis on customer service. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
William, This is the way to provide a solid foundation for your students upon which the rest of the course will be built. This is the start of developing rapport with the students and their career growth. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
William, Your last sentence contributes a lot to staying current in your field. By always being on the lookout for items, information or techniques that can be incorporated into the course you will stay current and show application of the course content to your students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Robert, So true because with variety of delivery the instructor is appealing to the different learning differences represented in the class. By making these connections the engagement of students is increased as well as well as their knowledge being expanded. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Robert, This has been my experience as well. This is why I talk with my new instructors to make sure they understand how important it is to be a role model in dress, language, conduct and respect. Respect is a two way street and must be earned by both parties. A professional persona goes a long way in helping to advance the earning of respect. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
