About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Fordham, Like your approach as you are offering both relevance and application with your delivery. By having former students come in you are letting them validate the content you are offering because they will tell the current students how this information and the skills will be used when they graduate. Stories from the field enhance the learning process because students as you know enjoy hearing examples of how this application or procedure was used in a certain situation. Comes the content come alive. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Fordham, Well said and a teaching approach that needs to be considered as instructional delivery is being planned. The more practical an understanding that the students have of the content and how it can be applied the better prepared they will be to succeed. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Fordham, Making connections for students is critical. You are right about them not being able to see the value of the course if they cannot connect to it. Sharing stories from the field and popular cultural references help them to see why the content is being taught and how it will help with their career development. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Cindy, Quick feedback and reinforcement that is supportive are two very powerful motivators as you have said. We need to remember both as we interact with our students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Cindy, Thank you for sharing your success with us. Hearing this is what excites me about how we are helping to increase the engagement of students and raise the energy of instructors like yourself. This is a win win situation. I wish you much continued success. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Chukwuka, I use games frequently in my classes as well. They do hold the attention of students. I like to use them as we review for upcoming quizzes. The students start to see very quickly what they do and do not know and this helps them to prepare for how they will study for tests. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Ramses, You do have a challenge with this time frame. I teach from 4 until 10 pm so I get them when they are tired from the day. Either way it takes a lot of planning and effort to make sure you have the needed content and activities to keep them engaged for the duration of the class. Your plan has the needed components. I wish you continued teaching success. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Cindy, Good organizational strategy. This gets the students working with others while helping them to find and create a support network within the class. This is a win win situation for everyone. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Diane, The more practical applications the better. You are giving them real world situations in which to use their newly acquired knowledge and this is how personal and professional growth occurs. I use a lot of case studies in my courses to help my students to get to the level of competence and proficiency. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Diane, This is a very good point because book knowledge does not always translate into patient application. Having the ability to relate to patients and use medical procedures in a way that provides support and comfort to patients is a must for career success. They need to be able to problem solve and listen in a way that enables them to provide such care. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
