About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Heather, Students as you know really like stories from the field. These stories reinforce the content and help the students make application of the content in a way that increases the value of the material. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Heather, Your guest speaker will help the students to see the value of the content being offered as well as let the students know how the content will be applied. This will increase their engagement and motivation for what is being studied. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Ninoska, What you are enforcing as your policy in relation to attendance is very valuable for students because they need to learn self discipline. Their on time attendance will be required by their employers so they need to develop these employment traits early on in their career and you are helping them to do that. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
DEBORAH, Right you are. This is the foundation upon which the rest of the course is built. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Heather, This sharing process is much like a pretest because of the information you learn about your students and their concerns. This gives you a start point in your instructional planning and lets you customize your content to overcome those concerns. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Ninoska, Good list of how to use the different components of instructional delivery to motivate students as well as keep them engaged. This is what the learning environment should be about. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
DEBORAH, This is a very good point that needs to be understood by the students. The clinical setting is where application is made and critical thinking is used. The students need to see the value of the content being offered in relation to how relevant it is to their career growth and success which leads them into the clinical setting and patient care. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
DEBORAH, It is critical to do this for your students. This way they will be receiving the latest content which in turn will help them to be well prepared when they enter their profession. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.

Ninoska, Thank you for the kind words and it is good to hear of the success you are having with your students. As for motivation the more you can make it personal for your students the better. They need to see the value of the content you are offering in relation to their career development and future. If you can give them examples of how this information will help them with their earning potential their motivation will increase. It is an ongoing process so look for small ways each time the class meets to help students see that are helping… >>>

Heather, A well-prepared syllabus is the foundation upon which the course is built. By sharing and discussing it with students everyone starts on the same page in terms of course polices, requirements and expectations. This reduces confusion and anxiety and gets the students to think about what they need to do to be successful in the course. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
