About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

William, Passion for one's field and enthusiasm for teaching about it is what students admire about their instructors. We need to bring both to the class each time it meets. Right you are about the fulfillment in knowing impact has been made in the life of both the instructor and the students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Leslie, You are offering instructional variety which is so important in keeping the attention of students. Your approach lets them reset their brains frequently and gives value to what you are teaching. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Leslie, I really like your understanding and approach. By you putting forth the extra effort to understand your students you are providing them with support and setting them at ease. This way they can focus on being successful and hopefully not become overwhelmed with being back in school. Nothing like some early success in a course to get them fired up and feeling like they are glad to be in school. Keep up the good work. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Dave, You make a very good point about student differences. Each class is unique and we instructors need to respond to them in an individual way so we meet their needs and provide support as needed. This is what quality instruction should be about. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Corean, Students like change of pace and variety in their instructional delivery and you are doing both with this approach. This is how you are engaging them for the duration of the class session. Keep up the good work. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Mark, Good plan for showing them how they can be successful in the course if they are willing to expend the effort and self discipline it takes to be successful. You are doing your part and they need to do theirs. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Stephanie, Good one two punch in terms of student accountability. This way they know the expectations and you know that they know you know they know them. (How is that for the use of a lot of knows?) Often students try to shift their success or lack there of to the instructor. This cannot be allowed since it is they that enrolled in college and are trying to create a career path for themselves. They need to have the self discipline to be in class and do the required work. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Stephanie, This is a good way to get their attention so when you share content with them they see the connection between the content and the objects in the lab. This creates value to them as they start to learn how to use the materials and equipment based upon the information you have delivered to them. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Brittney, I this your observation will be very valuable to you as you develop your own instructional style and expand your professional expertise. If you get the opportunity observe in different settings so you will see how other professionals handle lecture, discussion, small group and lab situations. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Corean, This is a must in order to get the course off on the right foot. By knowing the course expectations the students can make plans for meeting deadlines and meeting the objectives of the course. The sharing of these expectations gives them a vision of what is to come. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
