About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Duane, Personal examples help make the course come alive for students as well as adds value to the content being shared. You are helping them to see why they are taking the course and how it helps with their career development. This is their ROI factor. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Carly, Like your approach because as you know students have very selective memories when it comes to information being shared by instructors. They need to be reminded in multiple ways of due dates, project requirements and test times. Your approach gives them those opportunities. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Bruce, What a powerful opportunity this is. We should relish the fact we get to do this and get paid besides. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Bruce, This is a very good way to get student interest because you are showing them why they are in school in the first place. They need to see their future and how they can create a live style for their families and themselves. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Frederick, Thank you for these comments as they really target a key point that you make and that is you cannot wing it. If you try the students will disconnect and their learning will be impacted. Keeping up to date with both instructional best practices as well as the topics you are teaching will make sure the students are getting the most current content to aid in their career development. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Scott, This does get students going since they are required to analyze and think even after answering the first question. This is how much of the problem solving we do in our career fields so this helps them get experience in doing it for themselves. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
William, Like this approach because it gets everyone involved in responding to a question and being a part of the discussion. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Dixie, Thank you for your reflective thinking on answering this forum question. Your thoughts are right on in terms of how to prepare for and then successfully complete reflective thinking that will lead to successful problem solving. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Dixie, I am with you in terms of needing a balance. Being too far one way or another produces poor or no results. We need always to remember what our goal is and why we are doing what we are to achieve that goal. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Cynthia, This is a most worthwhile activity because it as you mention is an opportunity to make any needed adjustments to keep the course on target and the students engaged. This can be a very positive experience for everyone which results in the second part of the course being even more valuable to the students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
