About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Denise, You are most welcome. I know you are going to like the results you get from having former students come in and tell students like it "really is" out in the workplace. The motivation level is always high after one of these presentations. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Linda, I use both of these activities in my classes for the reason you state. They help students to start to see the real world they are preparing to enter and they expand their critical thinking problem solving skills. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Quetittia, Passion for your field and enthusiasm for teaching about it goes a long way in helping to engage students in the course content. Your comments are right on in that excitement is catching so we need to spread it around. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
D, What value do these two activities contribute to your classes and students? Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Discussion Comment
D, How do you get student feedback and then incorporate their suggestions? Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Ed, Thank you for sharing this example with us as it truly reflects how many students perceive teachers in their past. We all have had some challenging teachers and as a result like you mention we strive to not be like they were. As a result we can focus on the human factor in our teaching and work at providing support to our students as they move through our courses. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
D, What are some ways you do this? Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Stanley, A well prepared syllabus answers many student questions and gets everyone on the same page at the beginning of the course. This way the students can concentrate on the course requirements and how they can meet them. Without a good course syllabus they spend a lot of time worrying about what the instructor wants and this should not be. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Daniel, Thanks for sharing this ice breaker with us. I know it will be of help to other instructors as most of us are always looking for ice breakers we can use. I believe strongly in having introductions as well because they help students to get settled into the course and start to feel like they are a part of this emerging learning community. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Daniel, Like your approach because you are looking at your teaching environment through the eyes of your students and this is very important. By seeing what they see you are getting ready mentally to be the learning leader you need to be. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
