About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Sarah, Like your approach to professional improvement and getting to know your students early on in the course. Keep up the great work. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
IRIS, Students like change of pace and variety in their instructional delivery and you are offering that with your approach. Keep up the good work! Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Alista, Well said and something that all instructors need to remember as they share information with their students at their first class meeting. It is the foundation upon which the rest of the course is going to be built. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Norma, This is a great idea! Thanks for sharing it with us. I know it will be of help to other instructors looking for ways to get their students to review their syllabi. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
IRIS, Great way to check for understanding. This keeps everyone informed and moving forward in the course. If someone is not moving forward then you can quickly identify where that individual needs some assistance and provide it. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Jamie, Great idea. My students love doing the ice breakers because they give us a chance to get to know each other and get settled into the class. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
James, Your addendum is a good idea. I do the same with my classes. On the addendum I list the projects, activities and requirements for the course in bold print. I even use colored paper for impact. Since it is one page long and a bright color the students carry it with them I and refer to it often as we get closer to a due date or some other requirements. It is like a condensed version of the syllabus. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Steve, Right you are because as an expertise in the field you need to be current in both content and best practices. If you are then you are truly a learning leader for your students and will have their respect. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Randy, This is how expertise as an educator is achieved. By having a professional development plan that you can follow and as you gain knowledge as well as expertise your instructional effectiveness will increase as well. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Linda, You make a good point because this establishes a routine that lets students know their instructor is there to meet them and chat a few minutes for class. In classes I am able to answer many questions before class starts and help the students to feel comfortable as they get settled into class for that day. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
