About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Benjamin, Students like change of pace and variety in their instructional delivery. I teach a six hour course from 4 until 10 pm so I have to bring both variety and change of pace to my classes or I am going to lose my students. What you do is do a mini-lecture of 15-20 minutes and then have an activity. A small group, Q&A session, role play, case study, etc.. Then another mini-lecture and then activity. This way I keep my students engaged as active learners and don't let them become passive because after a long day they will go… >>>

Benjamin, It is easy to overwhelm them at the first class meeting. I spread my expectations out over several class meetings. I start with the most important ones that we will deal with in getting the class started and then add the others later on as we meet. Also, students of all ages have selective memories so they may have been told something but they will claim they never were told. I call this the Bermuda Triangle of Memory. Where announcements and important information goes to never be recalled again. So I repeat the information several times until they start… >>>

TIMOTHY, This is a very good point that needs to be considered in relation to first impressions. As instructors we don't know what attitudes students are bringing into the class so we need to make sure we have a good opening for the first class planned so the students will see how professional we are and that we are there to help them move closer to achieving their career goals. Brandon, Guest speakers can be an addition to the site visits because these individuals will be able to share the real world experiences that they have gone through. Something you might want to try as well would be to have the students shadow a professional in the field for a few hours or days just to gain some additional insight into their soon to be world. I would let them know it is OK to be nervous on their first few jobs because almost everyone is no matter what career they are in. There is a big difference between being… >>>
