Activity

Jeanne, unconventional is GOOD as our students today and very unconventional. I also like the idea of taking students a little out of their comfort zone. I do not know the source but I was tinkering around the Internet one day and came across a very cool diagram where there are two circles One small circle is labeled "Your Comfort Zone" and another large circle separate and to the left was labeled "Where the magic happens" and it really hit home with me and was a great description of where much of the research on teaching and learning has taken… >>>

april, how is the quiz presented? Do students know it is practice before then begin or are they under any impression that the quiz will count towards their course grade? Thanks for anything you can share. James Jackson
Earle, well stated. Assessments are intended as part of the learning process and should be used to move students forward and not backward. James Jackson
Lionel, great use of silence and impacting attached verbalization as to remind them how important listening is as a skill. It is also critical we as instructors understand the changes in our student body and more active lesson plans are taking the place of lecture. If you find yourself dealing with students that interrupt your lectures it may be time to flip the responsibility and focus on our lesson plans as another alternative. James Jackson

Angela, outstanding leadership by example. In the business world there is a saying to be fair but firm and I feel this applies to teaching as well. James Jackson
Jacqueline, Well stated. For students to be engaged it is critical that we as instructors be interesting but even more importantly is we show we are interested in our students. James Jackson
Vicki, thanks for sharing this great technique. Do you also discuss what caused students to select the wrong answers? Sometimes this can be easily overlooked but is a critical part of the learning process. James Jackson
Discussion Comment
Donald, is this policy enforced during the admissions process? In order for your policy to be fair students should not be admitted if they have tattoos or rings that would not allow them into the classroom. James Jackson

Virginia, great post and thanks for sharing. Just goes to show the importance of acting quickly on your classroom rules. The real critical issue here is making sure all students are aware of the policies and the consequences. You never want a student to have a legitimate complaint that they did not know the rules. In some classrooms students even sign documents of understanding. These are not contracts but simply a document stating they understand the rules and the consequences of the classroom. James Jackson

Sarah, sounds like you have made great use of your space. Another option is to have students use some of the collaboration and cloud based resources Online. They can share their ideas and strategies and this also provides you with a written transcript of their thinking process and how each member of the team made contributions. There are many resources available such as Google Drive and Google Docs, OpenClass, and Citrix Podio just to name a few. James Jackson
