Ryan, real world stories can be very useful. The more students can paint mental pictures and see themselves in those stories the better they can associate success for themselves. James Jackson
Matthew, happiness is an intrinsic value while the joy you experience each pay date is extrinsic. Some people make more money but are very sad in their career while others may make much less money but are more fulfilled. If you have the ability to ever watch the documentary titled Happy on Netflix I highly recommend it to you and your students. James Jackson
David, great post. Both of these seem intrinsic to me but I may not be reading them with the same intent in which you wrote them. There is nothing more satisfying to me then visiting with a former student and hearing of their continued success. James Jackson
Carol, take this one step further and discuss with students the importance of enjoying what you do. Some students are studying in fields that they feel will provide them the best financial gains but may not bring them any level of joy or fulfillment. Good for students to understand how they can be more successful if they actually enjoy their career. James Jackson
Anita , do you ever discuss the differences between intrinsic and extrinsic values with your students? Students can benefit from a better understanding of these two motivational influences. James Jackson
Maria, great post and brings forward how important it is for instructors to constantly learn and stay on top of the latest trends. Learning disorders and test anxiety are real and the chance is high you will encounter some level during your time with students. Make sure you know how to assist your students and when to have them seeks additional assistance. James Jackson
ryan, great use of an active learning tool. Students learn better the more active they are during the learning process. James Jackson
Shoaib, do you ever discuss intrinsic versus extrinsic motivation with your students? For some a better understanding between what makes you truly happy versus the hardships of working for materialistic gains can provide some good guidance for your students. If you or your students have access to Netflix, check out a movie titled "Happy". Fascinating look at the science of happiness and also gets into some discussion of intrinsic versus extrinsic motivation. James Jackson
Traci, AWESOME and such techniques should be duplicated at very institution in america. From my perspective there is not enough peer to peer collaboration within the higher education institutions of our country. Thank you and your co-worker for being smart enough to understand the importance of such collaboration and the real winners are your students. Job well done. James Jackson
Gerald, what conversations do you have with your students so they better associate the homework and practice quizzes as preparation for the quizzes that count towards their class grade? The more students understand your methodology the more they will come to accept it. Thanks for any information you can share. James Jackson
