Juliet, how much of this information do you share with your students on the first day of class? Students need to know early on what success will look like so best to let them know on day one the "Best Practices" for success within your classroom. When students hear the results based on your teaching experience and prior student outcomes, they are more likely to engage and follow your lead. James Jackson
Jerry, what are some of the ways you take advantage of these "A-ha" moments? As I read your post I was reminded of a lesson I learned through The Pacific Institute by Dr. Joe Pace: The teacher will appear when the student is ready is the concept and basically is the same as what you describe. How we as instructors take advantage of these golden moments define our level of success. James Jackson
Juliet, we all need some form of monetary compensation in the performance of our jobs in order to sustain our lifestyles. Not all instructors however are passionate about their subject matter or about their students and there are much easier ways to make money. Your response demonstrates how much passion you have for your subject area and for your students to be successful. Please keep up the great work. James Jackson
Jim, do you have any data on how well students perform on the "hands-on" assessments versus more traditional question/answer based assessments? Thanks for anything you can share. James Jackson
Diane, great job with your review on test taking skills and tips. The wrong assumption to make is that all students know how to take tests they just fail because they do not know the information. Students can know the material very well and still fail an exam. Keep up the great work. James Jackson

Mary, looks like you have a good structure in place. One other consideration are those students with some level of learning disorder. Not all students think alike and for some students they struggle to translate their knowledge onto various forms of exams. For some they may invert ideas and concepts which can result in selecting wrong answers even when they know the correct answer. For others they may struggle to put their thoughts in writing for essay type questions. The more you get to know each of your students the better prepared you will be in identifying which of your… >>>

Tom, you are correct. A good guide can both control and befriend their students to the correct levels. The primary purpose is for the student to move forward with more knowledge, skills and abilities than when they started with you. Nothing wrong with students considering you disciplined and maybe not even their favorite instructor but if they learn from you then yo have performed a service they will come to better understand later in their years. Emily, passion and willingness to be fully prepared rank very high on my list as well. There is no excuse for an instructor that is unprepared to deliver a top rate lesson to their students and this is the primary purpose for which schools pay for our services. James Jackson
Mary, flexibility is good as long as it does not appear to show favoritism or prejudice in any way. Be fair but firm and treat everyone equally. James Jackson
James, good teaching is much like telling a story. The more engaged your students the more they will retain and be able to use later. James Jackson
