Richard, your passion for teaching really comes through in your post. It is this type of passion that students recognize in their favorite instructors and also tends to yield the best outcomes in the way of student results. Thanks for sharing. James Jackson
Sharon, along with preparation of needed knowledge of the subject matter do you also include test taking techniques that can assist in reducing stress related to taking tests? Thanks for anything you can share. James Jackson
Steven, thanks so much for getting back with me and this is a method I hope others will take to heart and give it a try as it sounds interesting, relevant and helpful to students. Keep up the great work. James Jackson
Cheryl, test taking can be a daunting issue for many students regardless of the level of preparation. Continual reassurance and taking time to train students on best test taking skills can go a long way to assist students in feeling most comfortable during an otherwise stressful event for many students. Melissa the best way to gain traction being new to any organization is to master their current set of policies and procedures and be excellent at what you do. Introduce simple suggestions at first to gain some followers and at some point others will ask you how you get such great results. Conform where necessary to be part of the team but continue to interject your ideas within your own classroom and measure your results.

Dixie, great post and a common are of conversation for many instructors. There are never any winners when you get into a confrontation with a student. You as the instructor tend to look like you are not caring and just there to take advantage of your title of instructor while students can shut down completely for the remainder of your time with them. Best practice is to remember that students rarely lash out with no reason and as professionals our focus is to get to the root cause of any issues and confrontational situations. Control the moment and do not… >>>

Allen, great post and the best policy is to always scorn in private and praise in public. You just never know how a situation will play out and some students feel the louder person will win in any argument so never give them the chance to be the louder person in a public setting. James Jackson

Fedele, a little silence can go a long way and make a powerful statement. I sometimes include a statement to the tone of "anything you would like to add to our conversation?" and than really sits with them for a few weeks at least. James Jackson

Daniel, policing the classroom is one of the harder parts of being an instructor. The good thing I see is you have your own experiences you can call upon which will allow you to control with some level of compassion and that from my perspective gives you a great advantage. Few students actually enjoy the process involved with learning but they do it because it is necessary to learn and achieve their goal of graduating and getting into a career. We as instructors are in a similar situation when we are asked to be outside our comfort zones with all… >>>

JODY, great comment and taking control by having a private conversation is the most professional process versus "having it out" with that student in front of their classmates. James Jackson
