Activity

Juanita, well stated. For any instructor that feels teaching gets easier by always teaching the same topic is in the wrong profession. You can teach the same topic for years and never repeat the same lesson plan for a course if you do it correctly. Keep up the great work and thanks for sharing. James Jackson

Jeanne, do not confuse knowing your students with being a buddy. Guides know their students well but know the difference between being a friend and taking the role of a mentor, guide and leader. Friends tend to not challenge each other or take friends out of their comfort zones. Guides are experts at taking students outside of their comfort zones and to just the correct levels to enhance the overall learning process. Continue to learn all you can about your students but use that information to challenge them and take them as far along the learning path as possible. Please… >>>

Kimbely, great attention to detail and this is important to ensure a smoothly running classroom. I am sure you have heard that failure to plan is planning to fail. Looks like you are doing a great job at strategically planning for the success of your students. Keep up the great work and thanks for sharing. James Jackson

Katessa, great testament to transformational education. You are changing behaviors and beliefs which is one of the harder things to do in education. Another technique that has worked well is to ensure students understand the importance of your subject in their total earning potential after they graduate. Every job description I have read includes the necessity to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Those that have the best mastery of written English tend to advance more often and to higher levels so by taking your class seriously your students greatly increase their lifetime earning potential. Just something to consider… >>>

Nancy, what actions do you plan to take within the next 30 days and within the next 30 weeks to make maximum use of the information you have learned in the class? Thanks for anything you can share. James Jackson
Eric, one of the best posts I have seen and one every instructor should read. The days of standing in front of a classroom and lecturing need to be over and abolished. The role of the modern instructor is to be among the students and not in front of them. By fully engaging your students and properly preparing an actual lesson plan with intentional and strategic forethought you greatly increase your ability to achieve your desired learning outcomes. Keep up the great work. James Jackson
Bernard, great post and excellent comments. Assessments are an important part of learning but need to be properly administered and explained to students. For many students in career colleges they have not had a formal education experience in many years so taking the time to explain how testing benefits them and then properly preparing them for tests can go a long way to enhancing the level of success in achieving the desired learning outcomes. Steven, student feedback is a great motivator for instructors. I also enjoy graduation ceremonies and watching my students receive their degrees and the joy among their family members. James Jackson
Robin, in my experience the more students can be made to understand how the topics you teach impact their earning potential the more they become interested in the subject matter. This includes general education or career specific courses. Thanks for sharing. James Jackson

Cathy, how often do meet with your fellow instructors? Do you ever have an opportunity to discuss policies and regulations as a group? Thanks for anything you can share. James Jackson
