Romane, You are very right! There are many methods to help translate the skills we teach to the experience of actually doing them. You are right to point out that experiential learning helps with that translation. Dr. James Willis III

Renette , You bring out some very good points here. You are definitely right that connections can be formed. It's important to guide students in understanding the importance of these connections; often, these will lead to a full-time position! It's also important, as you've noted, to remember that the more skills acquired, the more marketable the student. Great job! Dr. James Willis III

Arvice, That is very true! It is very important to always relay what students are learning in the classroom and in intern/externships to the so-called "real world." Dr. James Willis III
Shirley, Absolutely! This is another way instructors can see the "lightbulb moment" when it all clicks. The experiential component of clinical learning is vital. Excellent observations! Dr. James Willis III

Melissa, You are absolutely correct that every day is an "interview" at an intern site. Sometimes it's difficult to express this adequately to students. That said, an internship is a very effective way of teaching professionalism, to help them highlight their strengths and constructively work on their weaknesses. What are some ways you work with students to help them develop these professional skills before they begin their rotation(s)? Are there other ways to help students learn what to expect and the ways they should act? Dr. James Willis III
