As someone who has had the honor of being in career education and corporate training for thirty years (gee, it makes me feel much older!), I can honestly say that I am the happiest professionally when having the opportunity to interact with fellow career educators - whether it be a training event, webinar, or medium such as this where we can collaboratively share our thoughts.

Hi Julie! I want to thank you for your comments and reiterate the excellent point you have made. Just as important as the technical skills we teach, according to our professions, are the critical skills - articulation, problem-solving, interpersonal, etc. The ability to communicate professionally, orally and in written form, is crucial to job success in disciplines across the board, and your requirement of a written submission is one of the foundations to that success. Hi Jose! Thanks for your comments and for your participation in the discussions. I think you have addressed the number one key to working with student diverse learning needs - getting to know them professionally. It's amazing what experiences they can bring to the table. Assessments are, of course, an effective method for determining learning needs, but your point about asking them about previous experiences is particualrly interesting. I have often had new students simply write down their career goals, expectations, anticipated hurdles, and what, as a resource, would help them the most in the learning environment. Hi Peter! Thanks so much for your comments! As you have noted, voice tone can send an important message to your students. I have found that student perception of my tone of voice directly affects how they relate to my presentation of topics and how they engage in accompanying learning activities. The instructor certainly sets the positive tone in the classroom or lab. Just curious, having a deep voice to your advantage, how does your tone change depending upon the situation in the classroom? Hi Racquel! Thanks for your comments! You have raised an important point about instructional delivery - tapping the different learning styles. Though your program relies on mostly visual supports, given the discipline and environment, it is good that you also adapt your delivery to the auditory and kinesthetic styles! Hi Jennifer! Thanks for your observations! It is always a challenge for us to ensure that we address all of the required competencies, skills and learning outcomes from a class or course, often in a very short time frame. This, coupled with the need to vary teaching methods to reach adult learners with differrent learning styles and needs can be particularly difficult. As you reference, time is the crucial resource! Hi Barry! This is a very interesting approach! The research assignment has an expected, definitive outcome in its own right, but the process itself in writing it yields information about a learner's cognitive, language, and critical thinking abilities. Could you tell us a bit more about the reserach assignment? Is it discipline specific? Does it involve investigation and interpretation on the student's part, or is it more of a survey or summary of information? Does the student choose the subject? Thanks!!
