About me

Please allow me this opportunity to welcome everyone to The Lounge! As someone who has had the honor of being in career education and corporate training for thirty years (gee, it makes me feel much older!), I can honestly say that I am the happiest professionally when having the opportunity to interact with fellow career educators - whether it be a training event, webinar, or medium such as this where we can collaboratively share our thoughts.

Thanks Mike; when adult students view their instructor as an educational partner, and rightly so, I believe they much more buy-in and engage in the learning process. Jay ED106

Hi Kristin! I apologize for the delay in responding and appreciate your well thought out discussion points and questions. From reading your comments and witnessing the clarity in which you communicate, I would suspect that when a student asks a question that you just finished answering, it is not your lack of communication. Nor do I think it is automatically dis-engagement or lack of attention on the part of the student. In years of teaching and training, I have found that when it occurs, the adult learner, most likely, just needs to hear the answer again, but on their own… >>>

Bravo! Bravo!! What a wonderful example, Kristin, of an interactive learning activity that not only engaged the subject, but developed critical skills as well. I am excited that you were able to use a technique or follow a suggestion from another participant in the forum. I hope that all of our ED106 participants will visit the different discussion posts. Thanks! Jay Hollowell ED106 Facilitator
Hi Carlton, thanks so much for your observations. It really is a different world where more in-depth challenges with connectivity and function add to the more obvious challenge of simply not knowing the subject. We almost have to take it a step at a time, get to know our students' learning styles and frustration points, reinforce, and try to vary our instructional methods as much as possible in an attempt to reach our students. Thanks, Carlton; it also creates a highly participatory and engaging learning environment. Bravo! Jay Hollowell ED106 Facilitator
Thanks Mike, true, many of the traditional and simple teaching aids are still very effective. Do you ever have volunteer students come up to the board for an activity where they can express their knowledge and talent? Jay ED106 Facilitator
Thanks, John, sometimes we may want to exclaim, "Why can't you get this?" But, to your point, we have to constantly remind ourselves that though we may have taught a subject or process for years, it may still be brand new to an adult learner who's motivation and self-esteem can be undermined instantly. From your post, Wayne, "Some groups work well together some don’t. Either way I believe it’s a good lesson on working in a group toward a common goal" ...and such a realistic lesson in regards to survivng the workplace. You're right, each group has its own dynamics and approaches tasks at hand different ways; just as long as the team's desired outcomes, expectations, and ground rules are well defined. Thanks for your input! Jay ED106 Facilitator
Hi Wayne! It's amazing the number of adult learning challenges that have never really been diagnosed; to your point, reinforcement/practice is indeed crucial to the connection of "I get it" to "I can do it." Thanks, Jay ED106
Ah yes, I have seen that look from time to time, Wayne! You're right, hands-on reinforcement is key to comprehension and application, particualrly for those adult learners who have to "do it" in addition to "hearing it" or "seeing it demonstrated." Additionally, when I see the "look," I often stop and repeat and/or summarize, but a little differently from the first time, and often ask a volunteer student to paraphrase as well. Adult learners will definitely listen to each others' capture of material. Thanks for your comments! Jay Hollowell ED106 Facilitator
