About me

Please allow me this opportunity to welcome everyone to The Lounge! As someone who has had the honor of being in career education and corporate training for thirty years (gee, it makes me feel much older!), I can honestly say that I am the happiest professionally when having the opportunity to interact with fellow career educators - whether it be a training event, webinar, or medium such as this where we can collaboratively share our thoughts.

Dale, Great analogy! I might even add that each play, executed by a well thought out plan, gains yardage - like meeting the compliance standards, but the ultimate goal and benefit is the touchdown. I would think that it would be hard (using your analogy) to get the ultimate touchdowns without compliance being an actual culture. A series of gains in the right direction getting achieving victory for the right reasons! :-) Jay Hollowell
Sarah, Absolutely, there are so may reasons why, particularly, non-traditional students do not complete their education. Many reasons we do not have control over, but what we can do is, as you say, ensure a supportive and skill-relevant environment where expectations are reasonable yet challenging and where information is fully and accurately disclosed so that students know where they stand at all times. Vickie and David, Thanks for your on-target comments: It's almost a situation of "the forest as opposed to the trees." We have no choice but to acutely focus on compliance, but, as you suggest, doing it simply to meet a regulatory requirement often leaves the student out of the equation. I agree that compliance and ethics are not the same thing - compliance ensures we adhere to the checklist and ethics, moreso, guide our actions for a greater good. Additionally agreeing, compliance and student satisfaction are not the same thing - compliance sets a minimum benchmark where student satisfaction requires,… >>>

Sarah , You're right - training is at the core! And clear communication. Unfortunately, it only takes one individual to say or do the wrong thing when interacting with a student, even if it is a well-intended action or an inadvertent one, to misrepresent. Jay Hollowell
Well said, David! I think you have hit on a crucial observation regarding the characteristics of a compliance culture. As you reference, there are ways to comply to the necessary full disclosure of information needed by students to make informed decisions about their education, however, a culture of compliance looks not only at adhering to a regulation or requirement, but focuses on the best, most helpful and student-friendly way to disclose the information. A huge difference! Thanks for your comments! Jay Hollowell
Hi Amy, Excellent comments - your three points certainly constitute a good foundation to student-first customer service! Jay Hollowell

There is a lot of discussion among educational colleagues going on at present regarding faculty performance and how it is measured. True, effective evaluation of instructors relies on some type of measurement linked to performance outcomes, but how subjective is it? Even when we use assessment scales for a performance appraisal, there is still subjectivity at hand.

Two questions:

What is your concept or definition of faculty performance and to what outcomes is it linked?

How does your institution evaluate faculty performance and how subjective is it?

Margaret, Thanks for these references! All are areas of crucial importance and must be accurate, documentable and fully disclosed to ensure that students are completely informed about their educational choices or options. Jay Hollowell
Jennifer, "A quality education produces quality individuals for the workforce." Thanks Jennifer for this observation. In the end, producing quality and skilled graduates for the workforce is at the heart of our unified mission, the reason for our existence, the result of an on-point and compliance-culture-based institution! Ruth Ann, This cuts to the chase! Standing by your word and fulfilling promises made - integrity builds trust! Thanks! Jay Hollowell
