What are one or two of the clearest ways for an individual who is not a teacher to demonstrate the intelligent heart?

Susan, The sentence "Some students have great potential which has never been realized because no one has cared enough to show them they can be successful" clearly summarizes why some students have not done well in school. There are so many negative influences in our students' lives that we need to help them overcome. What are one or two of the most effective things that your team does to help students internalize the fact that they can be successful?
