I agree 100% with your assessment of both types of classroom communication. Of course, both of them have their downfalls also. For example, I had a problem in my synchronous where a student would log on and then leave his computer. It took me awhile to figure out that this was happening. One evening I was "calling on students" who hadn't raised their hands and he did not respond. On a break I had to call him on the phone and invite him back to class :) Since you are currently an online instructor, do you have any war stories… >>>

Marcia, You make a terrific point about the qualities of an online student. Your response shows just how far online education has progressed in the past few years. I don't know that we're at a point, however, where we can totally ignore the "name" of the school or the accreditation. Diploma mills still exist and students, as well as employers, need to do their homework when evaluating an educational institution's quality. What do you think? I am interested in your thoughts :) Jane
Sherri, I agree... trying to coordinate the input from four schools will require an effective course management tool. Best of luck to you! :) Jane

Hi Sherri, Actually, I have found group projects to be very effective in the online environment, for many of the same reasons that they are used in the traditional classroom. Building community in a virtual classroom is important and group projects help students to develop a sense of belonging. Sometimes, when students are geographically dispersed, the logistics of completing a group project present some challenges but, all in all, they are as useful online as in the classroom. As far as the independent learner is concerned, he or she can glean much from the experience of a group project. Thanks… >>>

Hi Sherri, PowerPoint works very well for delivering lectures in an online course. The "how" when creating the audio portion of the lectures depends on the capabilities of the course management system you are using. At Strayer, this is a fairly simple process because the recording and saving of audio files is built in. You may also use the broadcast capabilities of PowerPoint. You mentioned that you use group projects as part of the learning process in your classes. Would you continue to do so when teaching your course online? Just curious :) Jane
Sherri, I couldn't agree more. Being technologically savvy is no longer optional in today's work environment. Thanks for your response :) Jane
Hi Sherri, The method for preparing a transcript of a chat session depends on the course management system you are using. My best advice is for you to use the help function and search for instructions. Some chatting programs don't have this feature. If I can help you with a specific chat program, please email me. :) Jane
Hi Sherri, I believe that you are correct; some employers are still a bit skeptical about online learning but, for the most part, it is gaining acceptance. Do you think that there are some characteristics of an online that could make them better employees? Just wondering... Thanks for your response, Jane :)
John, I believe you have hit on the true purpose of the design specification document; to streamline the development process. Also, you make a good point that the content of the course must not be sacrificed in the streamlining process. Balance is the key. :) Jane
Jason, It sounds as if you are comparing career colleges with traditional academic institutions rather than online learning with classroom learning. Today, all types of education and training can take place online. Many of those seeking to earn degrees online are nontraditional students so, in that respect, I agree with your analogy. Online students do tend to have a much better idea of what they need to get from their educational endeavors. Good post!! Jane
