When a student fails a test or is behind in there labs now is the time to act. We need to make sure the student knows what they are missing in lab and make sure they know we have tutoring. When and were tutoring is available is very important. Same goes with attendance. Why did the student miss a day? Show concern about this problem and that you are willing to work with them.

Money has a lot to do with retention. A student needs to be employed. Also, students that run with the wrong people will make bad choices and sometimes fail a class due to peer pressure. As an instructor you need to catch this problem before it is too late.
This is school commitment. Teaching the students why we act professional and how this will get them the job.

A student with reading disabilities requires a lot of patiience. If you can get through to this student it is what makes our job great and our retention will improve.

Having fun in class keeps the students interested. When a student(s) fall behind ask them questions on why they are not attenteding school, show concern, offer them help, and find out what their concerns are.

I feel that you must motivate the student to keep them interested in what you teach, regardless of what you teach. Make class fun, add humor and talk about real world experience.

On the first day I give the students an overview of the class and tell them my rules. I do not come on overly strong. I also tell them I am an adult, like they are and will treat them like an adult unless they act like children.

You must be well prepared to teach this class. Your students are looking at you as a mentor to what they want to learn. You better have new things for students to learn or they will not respect you as an instructor.

By raising and lowing your voice this will keep the students from sleeping and keep them interested. Also moving around the class helps. Don't use a mono tone voice, this will disintest students quickly and put them to sleep.
