Coleen, I have added social worker to my list also. It really shows how students can connect to you. Online may be the only way they can connect with someone. Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Coleen, You make so many points. We do have to address students in a more individual context that we do in f2f. You try to anticipate as many student needs as you can and incorporate into your course but really we do need to connect with each student and that is our challenge and our opportunity. Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Coleen, Great post. I love enthusiasm, I like humor. Just as in a f2f course you have to find your online persona. Students get it; they can connect to people in an online environment, we are going to have to do the same. Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Coleen, What a great post! yes, you need a presence in the classroom. It amazes me instructors don't understand that that is what makes f2f courses seem successful is instructor presence. Yet that is what may be missing in an online course. You really have to find your way to create and sustain online presence just as you have to in a f2f course. Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Laura, Yes, they will and do. It is always good to make sure students can find information important to them in various places. I also make a video that explains where to find certain key items and make students watch it for a grade. They can always go back to review it. Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Laura, You are right. It doesn't matter if the student is new to online or used to online learning, the "c" words are so important to student success. Those are instructor expectations. Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Coleen, It really is a delicate balance. You want to make sure students know how to use the technology without overwhelming them You also want to make sure they learn how to sue the technology. The lack of knowledge can't be an excuse. Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Coleen, You make great points. It is important students have success with technology to empower them to work in it. That will help with the frustration. You don't want the technology to be the barrier to learning. Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Laura, I agree with you! Don't you think it seems we think more is better in the online environment more than f2f? We try to compensate for not being f2f by adding more, more, more technology. Let's add more, more, more interaction among people. Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Laura, What a great post! The courses and their content including objectives should drive technology decisions. At least that is what it should do! Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
