These are great ideas! Thank you.
Hello, Dimitria, This is an interesting comment. I had not thought of this, but I'm sure students have. It certainly makes the course facilitator stay on her toes.
It can be challenging to identify students who would do well online. There are several self-assessment quizzes online that some schools require students to take; e.g. Will you be a successful online student?, How will I know if I'm ready to take courses online? The students should be computer literate and have access to a computer outside of class--whether it be at home or a school-sponsored lab. Explaining to older students that keyboarding is very similar to typing can sometimes reduce their anxiety. Cohort groups of peers working together can also provide wonderful support.

Hi, Melissa, I really like your ideas about taking advantage of hybrid courses "in class" time by using quizzes and polls. I also think it is great to have students hear lectures BEFORE they read the material. Another "activate prior knowledge" ploy is to have students take a stab at end-of-chapter questions BEFORE they read the chapter. In this way new material can seem like an old friend, or at least something students can recognize concepts within (sorry to end with a preposition.)
I'm pleased to see so many are recognizing the need for specific training for online instructors (and students). Anything that will reduce frustration will help everyone get through the inevitable connection problems. Somehow knowing "why" something is happening reduces anxiety and anger.
Hi, Monika, Many feel as you do--some courses lend themselves to distance learning; others require "hands on" in a classroom. How do you (and other posters) respond to the notion that "every course" can be taught online given enough resources? I'm not trying to put you on the spot. I'm just playing devil's advocate since you expressed yourself so clearly. Thanks for participating. Linda
Pamela, you certainly spoke eloquently to this topic. Well done
Korin, good luck on your journey to online. I agree with tour earlier post that establishing a helpful online personality is key.
Hi,Chris, Seeing what works elsewhere is a good idea. Customizing policies to your program and student needs and remaining flexible helps.
Hi, Orlando, Do you think faculty are keeping up with students in terms of technology use?
