About me

I am a career educator (27+ years) in higher education at the university and career college level.    I love helping colleagues put the pieces together to learn how to be the best instructor/educator possible.

Activity

Ralph, In my experience, rarely are students given any kind of orientation to learning whether or not they have a disability. Renee Shaffer
Ralph, Oh I wish that there were more people like you. Renee Shaffer

Can walking (and/or exercise) help students learn?  See this article

Charles Dickens walked everywhere in London. Walked 30 miles to his country home and then back. BTW, excellent recent movie about Charles Dickens and his mystery life called The Invisible Woman

Elizabeth, And I am sure that you receive good evaluations! :) Renee Shaffer
Tina, How do you do your labs? What areas/ concepts are you teaching? Renee Shaffer
Discussion Comment
Elizabeth, Yes, abandonment is a big issue. Renee Shaffer
Discussion Comment
Tina, It is always good to incorporate additional reinforcing information (games, etc) just to make sure students are "getting" the information. Renee Shaffer
Elizabeth, As a student who literally fell asleep in a lecture class and fell out of my chair into the aisle (early morning class, boring teacher), I am committed to keeping students engaged. I had enough self-esteem, to pick myself up and keep going but many students would never have come back to class and not succeeded. Renee Shaffer
Tina, That is so true that our experience in F2F teaching really helps us assess that students are learning. Good point! Renee Shaffer

Every decade or so, people talk about the need of students to take a break from school- a gap year- before they go on to college.  They can do community service, find another competency or skill, etc. It was in the news yesterday and today (See below)  What do you think?
