Literacy is ongoing and should be owned by every individual - as an instructor, do you read and write regulalry? Do you also expect your students to read and write in every class? Listening and speaking are also literacy skills, so how much do you expect your students to listen and speak/discuss/debate/discuss? OR....do you think this is the business of language teachers only? How about the 5th literacy skill...comprehension? Do you check for understanding in EVERY class and do you have students explain or demonstrate in order to exhibit their understanding?
