Lanny, Great points! Yes, I agree. The expectations of today's students are increasingly to be fully connected and have direct access to information, other students, and instructions at all times and from anywhere. Dr. Ruth Reynard

Lanny, Great points! So the Internet has opened up communication, interaction, engagement, delivery of content, customization and production of content. For sure it can support a much more dynamic learning environment than conventional classes. Dr. Ruth Reynard

Jim, Love it! Great example and it is wonderful that you have experienced that level of "virtual" learning. Yes, I too remember the shock when I returned to education in the 90s after graduating my bachelors in the early 80s - what happened to the library cards?? ...and really that wasn't too long ago :) Dr. Ruth Reynard

@anncarolynhill :  Great points!  Yes, I agree that the medical sites are much used and that they are more complex than WikiPedia - that is a good example of exploring new information which is used a lot by students.

I would also say that while the distribution of technology is not equal, the affect of new technology is so ubiquitous in our society that most students have already been influenced by new ways of accessing information and the immedicacy of input and output....such as your medical site example.

Valerie, Great examples! So, customization of learning, collaboration of effort, and self-directed production of new information makes new technology so powerful as providing tools in a new way to learn and apply directly to a context of use. Dr. Ruth Reynard
Lauree, Great ideas and examples. Please continue the discussion in the Instruction Forum in the Teachers' Lounge. Dr. Ruth Reynard

Lauree, I agree with you but would also suggest you think further about "progressive customization" in the sense that it can be developed through a flexible learning environment. The self-directedness of new technology really promotes these skills when used well. Dr. Ruth Reynard
Lauree, Yes, and those "boundary less" expectations mean that we, as instructor, must accommodate these expectations within our classes through open-ended projects and wikis etc. Dr. Ruth Reynard

Lauree, I agree - god points! We are, however, still confined by conventional standards and regulations. I think our challenge is to support student learning and knowledge building processes while still meeting current standards. That's why instructional designs must be flexible. Dr. Ruth Reynard

So many instructors become frustrated with students' uses of WikiPedia in papers etc.  The truth is, any academic or professional Wiki is an information source and should be recognized as such. So, how can we help students recognize the differences in courses...?  I have used the following research "tiered" outline for students in various projects:

LEVEL 1 - General Information (this includes Wikis)

LEVEL 2 - Critical Comparisons

LEVEL 3 - Applied Ideas

Provide students with pre-identified examples of each and then methods to synthesize information into ideas and concepts and then action steps to apply those concepts to the… >>>
